Siksika Nation, home to Canada’s second-largest reserve with approximately 7,800 members, faces significant challenges in providing safe and culturally appropriate access to healthcare. Community members often travel to larger cities to receive the necessary care, which creates barriers to consistent, holistic health management. Recognizing these obstacles, Siksika Health Services (SHS) has initiated transformative programs that integrate traditional knowledge with modern medical advances.

The Role of Traditional Healing
Traditional healers hold a deeply respected role within Siksika culture, passing down their knowledge and values—such as respect, trust, and honesty—through generations. This cultural foundation emphasizes the importance of holistic well-being, connecting the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of health.
Addressing Diabetes Through Innovation
One of the most pressing health concerns in Siksika is diabetes, particularly the prevalence of diabetic foot ulcers. Over 50% of wound care cases within the community stem from such complications. Recognizing the critical need for localized solutions, home care team leader, Cheryl Sorenson introduced a groundbreaking pilot project to address this issue. The initiative uses specialized technology to measure foot temperature and pressure in members with type 2 diabetes, enabling early detection and intervention.
A Step Forward
Funding for a pilot project was provided through PATHWAYS. Starting with 50 participants in its information sessions, the program secured 35 committed members who actively monitored their foot health. Participants received custom orthotics equipped with advanced insoles to track foot conditions, reducing the risk of severe complications.
